Installing WordPress using Fantastico is one on the easiest installation of a website around. You can set up a website within a few minutes. I will supplement this article with a few more to cover the other steps to make your site look and act the way that a WordPress site should.
But now, the first step is to get your WordPress installed on your site.
What you will need:
- Hosting service that has cPanel (web based management software). If you get a Linux based server, there is a good chance that it uses cPanel.
- Access to cPanel – your hosting provider should have provided you with an email with details about how to log onto your cPanel service.
Step by Step Instructions
Log into your cPanel account and click the Fantastico icon (happily pictured below).
With the Fantastico window open, click on the WordPress link located in the Blogs section.
A WordPress page opens and you click the New Installation link:
Now we have to define the configuration. It is not too hard.
1. Install on Domain: From the drop down, your domain should be selected. (If not select it).
2. Install in Directory: In most instances, leave this blank (unless you only want to install the blog functionality onto an existing site)
3. Now you will have to enter the administrator name and password. I have used admin in this example but use a username and password that it not simple and easy for hackers to guess. You can change the password later but not the username for the admin.
4. In the base configuration section, enter the following information:
Admin nickname: the name you want to display for the admin account.
Admin e-mail: the email address of the admin
Site name: your domain
Description: What your site is about (optional you can change it later)
Once you have entered all of the settings click the “Install WordPress” button.
The installation will tell you what updates have been made. Click the Finish Installation button.
The installation is finished. You have the option to email the details of the installation to someone – it is not a bad idea to email it to yourself.
The next step is to click in the link to your site wp-admin area as shown above and you will go through to the login page of your wordpress site.
Login using the username and password used in your setup.
Click the link to your site as shown above and taadaa – there is your site.
Where to Now?
The next steps are to change the look using themes and add some extra functionality using plugins.
